Sept. 6-9th Carbon Cycle and Global Warming

Read this recent article about a glacier in Greenland: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-mid-wales-14771523

Why do you think the glacier is melting at such a rapid rate? What does this glacier's demise have to do with the carbon cycle?

What other evidence is there for the correlation between carbon dioxide levels and increasing average global temperatures?

  1. Typically, ice does not melt without some sort of heat source. This heat source can most easily be credited to climate change (aka global warming). By burning fossil fuels such as gasoline for cars and coal for power plants the human race is releasing abnormally high and unnatural amounts of CO2 into the air. Since with the extra CO2 in the atmosphere temperatures are increasing and henceforth melting the glacier. One of the previous blogs about animals slowly moving toward the poles is another example of increasing global temperatures due to carbon dioxide levels. However, weather patterns such as the severe droughts in Oklahoma and Texas are other obvious example of how CO2 is influencing the global climate

I believe that global climate change is the reason that the glaciers are melting at such a rapid rate. This can be referred to as Global Warming. This ties in the the carbon cycle because the extra release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that was previously locked away in a carbon sink is not a part of any natural cycle and is the reason for the current worries about climate change. Other evidence for the correlation between carbon dioxide levels and increasing average global temperatures are that satellite and surface measurements find less energy is escaping to space at CO2 absorption wavelengths. Also ocean and surface temperature measurements find the planet continues to accumulate heat. This gives a line of empirical evidence that human CO2 emissions are causing global warming.

  4. Climate change is causing the glaciers to melt so quickly. CO2 released during the carbon cycle holds in heat which is what is causing the climate change and glaciers to melt. CO2 is released naturally during the carbon cycle but there is an excess of CO2 due to carbon emissions form cars, factories, and many other things.

  5. I think the glacier is melting at a rapid rate because of the extreme climate change that is occurring on Earth. This climate changed is caused by greenhouse gasses, such as carbon, trapping heat in the atmosphere and causing temperature change. The carbon in our atmosphere naturally fluctuates, but in recent years there has been a massive increase because of the human fossil fuel combustion element. When scientist check glaciers for the little gas bubbles that get frozen inside they can check to see the carbon levels. The amount found in bubbles from recent years doesn't bode well for the glacier in greenland, OR the human race.

  6. I believe the glacier is melting in response to the extreme climate change earth has been experiencing for the last couple of decades. We've been led to believe that the greenhouse gas; carbon is responsible for the climate change along with other gasses. The amount of carbon in the atmosphere has increased rapidly because of the constant burning of fossil fuels around the world. This carbon does not allow heat to travel through it and acts as a heat blanket, quickly warming earth's surface. Other evidence of the effects of greenhouse gasses include the warming of the oceans, severe droughts occurring around the world, and other data collected by scientists. For example, as Ally stated above, scientists can test the gasses found deep within glacial air pockets and compare it to the greenhouse gas levels of today. These factors compiled together produce a rather convincing argument that the rise in greenhouse gasses are effecting the earth for the worst.

The reason that the glaciers are melting at an increased rate is because of an increased temperature. This increase of temperature is most likely due to an increase of green house gasses, particularly CO_2. Due to our deep reliance on combustion we have released a significant amount of C0_2 into the atmosphere and with the short term benefits of using fossil fuels, it is likely that humans will not lose their dependence on this fuel for some time. One reason that we know that there is a correlation between C0_2 and increasing temperature is from the very glaciers that are melting. Scientist have extracted sample of glaciers at a certain depth that act as a history of our atmosphere. From the ice cores they discovered increased of greenhouse gasses with increases of temperature.

  8. I believe that this glacier is melting at such a rapid rate because of global warming, which is sparked by an increase of C02 in the atmosphere mainly from people burning fossil fuels such as coal. Another climate issue due to excess CO2 in the atmosphere is the severe droughts we are experiencing as a population.

  9. Well, the human portion of the carbon cycle involves people re-realeasing trapped carbon into the atmosphere. Studies have shown that high temperatures correlate with larger amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere (they can go far down into ice layers to find pockets of CO2. It really isn't that hard to put 2 and 2 together. People can be so dense sometimes it can be (wait for it) gob-smacking (see what I did there?).

Any who, something else I've seen that's suprising is the correlation between the decline of swashbuckling pirates and global rising temperatures. Look at this shocking picture.

The ice is melting due to global warming. Global warming is caused by an increase of Carbon dioxide in the atmospohere. The extra carbon people re-relaese have been scientificly linked with hotter temperatures. All are connected in a way, the glacier, hotter temps and increased carbon in the atmosphere.

  11. The glacier is declining at a rapid rate due to climate change(global warming), although I can't say for sure whether this is the only factor in the problem. The carbon cycle has to do with the decline of the glacier because human contributions of CO2 to the atmosphere(greenhouse gases) raise global temperatures, thus melting the glacier. The most contributing factor to the increased carbon dioxide levels is the burning of fossil fuels, which the United States is the leading contributor of. Although it's true that human CO2 emissions are a big cause of global warming, there may be other significant factors in the equation.

The glaciers odd rapid rate of melting can be connected to the carbon cycle for one main reason. Heat. The carbon cycle has been somewhat thrown off balance by human interference with overproduction and creation of CO2 in our atmosphere. With the higher amounts of CO2 in the atmosphere the climate changes to a warmer setting and thus causes the glaciers to melt quicker. Other examples of this climate change has to do with the faster migration of certain animals up mountains and to the poles. Also can be explained with droughts and such in areas like Texas.

  13. With the climate at an all time high, it is causing the Glaciers to melt at a rapid speed. Humans unfortunatly are releasing so much CO2 that it is starting to slowly melt the glaciers. The world would be alterted indefinetly in the Glaciers all melted.

I believe the glacier is melting at such a fast rate because of global warming. The climate change of Earth is heavily supported with evidence. The carbon cycle is also having an affect on the glacier as well. The carbon cycle also has to do with global warming and is one of the reasons why its happening. Burning fossil fuels is increasing CO2 in the atmosphere.

  16. I think that the NATURAL heating of the Earth is most likely causing the glacier to melt. Although C02 is being released into the air, it has nothing to do with the glacier melting. Glaciers melt all the time, and have been melting. Ever heard of a little thing called the sun? Ya, that tends to melt things. But a glacier melts faster than usual? Eh, no biggie.

  18. The ice melting from the glacier is obviously global warming and with exes amounts of carbon in the atmosphere the glacier melts even faster. This is related to the carbon cycle in that carbon in that at a point in the cycle carbon goes into the atmosphere. Unfortunately there is to much carbon in the atmosphere. Other evidence of the correlation between carbon dioxide and increasing global temperatures is the fact that animals that aren't used to the heat and can't sustain themselves any longer are moving away from the ever warming equator and closer to the poles.

  19. The glacier is melting at such a rapid rate due to global warming. The studies have all shown that it is true and has largely effected the glaciers in the past few years. This relates to the carbon cycle because humans increase of the release of CO2 have caused much of the warming therefore leading to the melting of the glaciers. Other evidence of increased temperature is one of the past articles relating to species moving due to climate change. The effect it has on plants and animals is larger than many people would like to believe.

The ice melting from the glacier is due to global warming. this has to do with the carbon cycle because its is the main cause of global warming. And with increasing burning of fossil fuels, global warming is affecting the glaciers at rapid rates.

  21. The melting of glaciers is connected to the massive increases of carbon dioxide that have been released into the atmosphere in the last several decades. Through our reliance on motor vehicles and energy from fossil fuel combustion, and our removal of carbon sinks worldwide, we have raised the levels of CO2 to an alarming size, and have little means of disposing of it. Other examples of increased temperatures are increased amounts of droughts in locations around the world, and the changing migratory patterns of many species of animals. Although this could be just a natural temperature increase, as has been seen before in the Earth's history, the huge amounts of carbon dioxide are still a problem that natural systems are not accustomed to, and that must be dealt with.

This glacier is melting that fact is undoubtedly correct. This glacier is melting because the world is heating up. The world's temperature is rising through the increase in carbon gas in the air, from our excessive use of fossil fuels. This world goes through ice ages, and then back to heating trends; however, due to our massive influence on the carbon cycle, global warming has been increasing at a incomparable rate. This massive increase has caused this ice covered glacier to go from solid to liquid in just two years. The carbon emissions must be slowed down otherwise, the glaciers will disappear, which will in turn release massive amounts of methane gas, thus increasing greenhouse gases at an even faster rate; thus, destroying many species on earth including our own.

  24. there is no solid evidence that global warming is a for sure and certain fact that can be relied upon and is 100 percent correct. while there is good evidence now, and the glaciers are melting, this could just be a phase that the earth is going through, and if the cells removed from the glaciers show that this has happened before, then maybe the earth survived it then and can do so again. It may just be the earth's way of pushing competition and adaptation for a new generation of species.

Listen, the Earth is changing but is global warming the only reason this is happening? Glaciers have been changing forever.... ICE AGE? I don't know to be honest I don't beleive that global warning is accually happening. I just hope everthing is will work out. I think if we work together and be conseritive with our supplies we can survive for a really long time.

  26. I think glaciers are melting due to global warming. An important factor that takes place is the climate change. The climate change may be happening from the carbon cycle which increases the amount of carbon dioxide released in the air and as a result, the glaciers are melting because it is "unhealthy" for them. Scientifically speaking now, people contribute to the climate changes to because the more carbon dioxide we release out into the atmosphere, the hotter the temperature is going to be. But it's not like we can just stop breathing out air so I guess the glaciers are going to be melting very slowly.

  27. I dont think glaciers are melting due to global warming. Like my last blog post, I think that the earth is warming and cooling like it has in the past. Scientist need to look at both view points not just the "climate change" view. However i do believe that about 5% of the "climate change" could be due to human impacts.

I believe the greenland glacier is melting and seperating at such a rapid rate because of the "global warming" occurence in the past couple of decades. The global warming occurence is caused by the burnig of fossil fuels and excessive amounts of carbon in the atmosphere. These gases create pockets that act as a blanket heating the earth. Which makes the glacier separation related to the carbon cycle. other examples of excessive CO2 are the droughts in texas and staes around.BUT we cant just blame the glaciers melting on global warming we are part of the problem too.

I think climate change is to blame for the glaciers to be melting at such a rapid rate. This is related to the carbon cycle through the carbon going into the atmosphere causing climate change which heats up the ice and causing the glaciers to melt. There is a lot of excess CO2 being emitted into the atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels, factories, cars and much more.
